Online games raises awareness of world hunger
FreeRice.com drawing 810,000 users a week
FreeRice.com is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Programme. The site was designed to provide an educational game to players for free while raising awareness of world hunger and poverty. It also provides a means for players to help fight hunger.
For every correct answer on this educational vocabulary game, 10 grains of rice is donated to the UN World Food Programme. This is made possible by the online sponsors who advertise on the site.
With 810,000 users a week and growing, FreeRice.com attracts people from all demographics. There is also a supporting Facebook page with over 4,000 fans.
The FreeRice Toolbar allows internet users to donate 5,000 grains of rice every time they search the web.
The rice donated through the Freerice Toolbar is very carefully tracked by WFP using a secure database. All rice donated through the toolbar and your help goes to the people who need it most.
Sponsors and advertisers on the site have access to a tailor-made CSR Banner which illustrates clients CSR commitments, positive exposure to stakeholders by co-branding with WFP and MDG’s; enhanced brand awareness through world-wide visibility at a giveaway price; donations are tax deductible which means a high return on investment.
